Blessing to offer free heart ultrasound screening for teenagers on April 7

Lovers heart cardiogram

QUINCY — Registration is underway for a no-cost cardiac ultrasound screening for teens ages 13 to 18 to assess for rare, but potentially life-threatening, cardiac conditions. The screening will be held from 1-4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7, at the Blessing Health Center West building, Suite 230, 927 Broadway.

The conditions, Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy and Marfan Syndrome, are genetically related. HOCM can result in irregular heart rhythms. Marfan Syndrome can cause weakening of the heart’s main artery. The screening is focusing on teenagers due to their active lifestyle that can put stress on the heart, aggravating the conditions. Cardiac ultrasound results will be reviewed by a cardiologist at the time of the appointment.

Registration is required and can be completed at events.blessinghealth.org and then searching “cardiac.” Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who can consent to medical treatment. Individuals should arrive 10 minutes before the appointment time to complete necessary paperwork.

The screening is sponsored by the Blessing Heart and Vascular Center.
