QUINCY — The truck driver training program at John Wood Community College is having an open house at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Workforce Development Center, 4220 Koch’s Lane.

Representatives from the program will give a brief presentation reviewing admission requirements, scholarships/funding options and career opportunities in the trucking industry. Attendees will learn about a 16-credit hour course load, financial-aid eligibility, logistics/truck driver training certificate and an online 8-week class.

“Students can expect job security, a potential life-long career and an incredible return on investment,” professor Phil Steinkamp said. “Eight weeks of classes to a $40,000 per year career is just the beginning. Many experienced drivers earn $60,000 or more. Our open house is the perfect time to ask questions and learn more about this exciting program.”

The program uses industry-standard equipment as teaching tools. Courses are certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute. Class A CDL drivers are in unprecedented demand. Students in the program will be actively recruited by numerous trucking companies, representing both local and national firms. Some employers may fund tuition costs.

Monday’s event is free and open to the public. Attendees should wear a face mask; social distancing will be maintained.

The next class starts Oct. 18. Classes meet Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., for seven weeks plus a one-week pre-session. For information, call 217-641-4971 or 217-641-4914.
