Daily Dirt for Oct. 30, 2021

College football is heading toward the finish line, which means it is a marvelous time of the year. Part of today’s three thoughts in Vol. 112 of the Daily Direct will deal with that very subject. You’re welcome.

1. First of all, I love pro football, but when compared to the college game there is no comparison. College ball is so much more interesting. Here’s a few thoughts from others as to why:

“From uniforms to stadiums to personalities, college football is a smorgasbord. That translates to the field, too. On any given Saturday, you can flip through the channels and see a dozen different games with a dozen different offenses — triple options and spreads, the Pistol and the Power I, wishbone and flexbones and yes, even pro-style. On any given Sunday, you can see the latest variation of the West Coast offense and the latest variation of the West Coast offense and the latest variation of the West Coast offense.” — Ryan McGee, ESPN.com.

“Rivalries for pro sports teams are just not even remotely close to college football rivalries.” — Ben Koo, the comeback.com.

“What’s the best rivalry in the NFL? Cowboys vs. Eagles? Packers vs. Bears? Those games don’t hold a candle to Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn, Oklahoma-Texas or Army-Navy.” — Kevin Kinkade, crossingboard.com.

“Michigan’s famed winged helmets and the old-school uniforms of Alabama and Penn State. There’s something to be said for those classic looks, which have endured in an increasingly gimmicky age.” — Chris Low, ESPN.com.

2. Speaking of college football, Saturday is the biggest day to date this season for those programs with aspirations of a national championship. The schedule is anchored by two huge rivalries that will play a role in who makes this year’s playoff field: Michigan vs. Michigan State and Ohio State vs. Penn State.

The first College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings are to be released Tuesday evening, and they are bound to contain a few surprises. The first rankings always do. Assuming that Michigan and Ohio State win their rivalry matchups this weekend, here are my picks for the top four come Tuesday:

1. Georgia: Best defense in the nation?

2. Alabama: If Tide wins out, they’re in. No rocket science needed.

3. Ohio State: The Buckeyes’ offense is the stuff of legends.

4. Michigan: Wolverine and Ohio State both fans are counting the days to their annual war to settle the score.

3. If I had my way …

Supermarkets would never will be permitted to drastically change their layouts. Am I still upset with the Hy-Vee on Harrison? Yes. Yes, I am.

High school athletic departments would schedule boys and girls varsity basketball doubleheaders a minimum of four times a season.

All theaters would offer a 10-minute intermission halfway through each feature film that is longer than 90 minutes in length. That would allow for bathroom needs, but importantly, a refill of snacks.

Steve still can’t find the Jell-O cups in HyVee’s new layout.
