HANNIBAL, Mo. — Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer—yet about 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed each year, and nearly 4,000 lose their lives to it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Early detection through regular screenings can make all the difference, and Hannibal Regional is offering women in our region a chance to take control of their health with free cervical cancer screenings.

Appointments for free cervical cancer screenings are required and will be available on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hannibal Regional Medical Group. This event is part of Hannibal Regional’s ongoing commitment to guiding our community to better.

“When we support preventive health for women, we’re strengthening the health of our entire community,” said women’s health nurse practitioner Kendell Farr, WHNP-BC, in a press release. “Women are often caregivers for others, and it is important that they take time to care for themselves.”

Women should begin cervical cancer screenings at age 21 and continue through age 65—even if they’ve received the HPV vaccine. While the vaccine helps protect against many cancer-causing strains of HPV, it does not cover all of them. That’s why regular Pap smears and other cervical screening tests are essential.

“If you’re between the ages of 21 and 65 and haven’t had a recent screening, this is a great opportunity to take a proactive step in protecting your health,” said Farr. “Screenings can detect changes early—often before cancer has a chance to develop.”

Take time for yourself, and take action for your health. Schedule your free screening today by calling 573-629-3500.
