So how many state representatives will Adams County end up having?

The first blush of a proposed new legislative map for Illinois has a huge impact on Western Illinois.

Adams County could greatly benefit, or could be severely harmed, once the dust settles following the 2022 elections if this map hold firm.

The heart of Adams County, including Quincy, is in a horizontally shaped House district that stretches all the way to Jacksonville. By having two of the largest population centers in Western Illinois in the same district, it is also relatively small in terms of square miles. Brown, Cass and part of Morgan (including Jacksonville) are in it.

Someone remarked on The Capitol Fax Blog that the new 99th looked like a strip of bacon.

Southern Adams County, including Payson, Plainville, Fall Creek and Burton are in the proposed 100th District, which includes all of Pike County. The 100th juts up to Ill. 104 between Quincy and Liberty, so land south of Quincy Regional Airport is in it. The airport itself is in the proposed 99th District. It also includes Scott, Greene, Jersey and Calhoun counties and parts of Macoupin and Morgan.

The Villages of Golden, Plainville and Big Neck in Northern Adams County are in the proposed 94th District. It is a massive district geographically stretching from Petersburg to the southern edge of the Quad Cities.

So, in other words, Adams County could end up with one, two, three or no State Representatives living in Adams County.

Same with The Illinois Senate where House District 100 would be part of Senate District 50 and House Districts 99 and 94 making up Senate District 47. Adams County could, theoretically have 1, 2 or no senators living in its boundaries. Although, Republican Jil Tracy, who would go from representing District 47 to District 50, is a pretty solid lock to hold a seat if she decides to run in 2022. Republican Steve McClure has a Springfield address so he would no longer represent Pike and Scott counties.

The “new” 50th is even more red-meat conservative than the current 47th as it loses Macomb/Western Illinois University. So whenever Tracy decides she’s done in the Senate, the odds are pretty good that her successor will come from the hard right.

It’s also very unlikely that someone from Adams County would be elected into the “new” 47th Senate District that encompasses that northeastern corner of the county including the Golden, Plainville and Big Neck Metroplex.
