Daily Dirt for Dec. 18, 2021

Today we start off with a hint of what it is like in a day in the life of Steve  … welcome to the three thoughts that make up Vol. 161 of the Daily Dirt.

1.The aging process certainly has its perks — retirement, anyone?! — but there are definitely some drawbacks, too.

  • I recently saw a list of thoughts that pretty much nailed the alleged golden years. Here are a few:
  • “Who cares if I look good? I’m comfortable.” (Once a fashionista, always a fashionista.)
  • “Wait! What did I come in here for?” (Can’t tell you how often this happens …)
  • “I could have sworn that was my password.” (I can really relate to this one. I try writing down all of my passwords, and then forget where I put what I have written down …)
  • “Has anyone seen my phone?” (I usually leave mine in my beloved Kia … and at some point most evenings, I spend about 15 minutes looking for it until I remember — the Kia!! And there it usually is, resting comfortably on the passenger’s seat with about 250 messages.)
  • “Sorry, I forgot what I was going to say.” (This is really bad when it happens in mid-sentence …)Any of those sound familiar? If so, welcome to the club.

2. In the wake of the recent Urban Meyer fallout, I saw these two posts.

At the very least, they made think. And once the initial drum bashing and name-calling have subsided, these two opinions will likely prevail:

From Jay Williams, ESPN analyst: “Blueprint for Urban Meyer to get another job:

  • 1. Negotiate buyout.
  • 2. Take a break for a few months.
  • 3. Sit-down interview with “60 Minutes”.
  • 4. Let other sports stuff happen and people will get distracted.
  • 5. Some mid-major college will him, or an SEC school.”

Peter Groff, former president of th Colorado Senate, political strategist, lecturer: “No, he’s not (finished). He’ll chill for a year or two (maybe), and some rumors will start … will some with millions (tens or hundreds) and he’ll be back. Winning is all that matters at Power 5 schools.”

3. A couple of weeks ago, I put together a list of what I felt were the top 30 Christmas-themed movies.

I’ve gotten quite a few suggestions for additions or corrections to that list. Here are what I consider were probably top three omissions:

Gold medal: “The Preacher’s Wife,” which is a great movie to watch with the wife and/or family. Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston were both tremendous. (Seriously, has Denzel Washington ever made a bad movie?) This holiday film was a total oversight on my part and should have been included in no worse than the top 15 of the initial list you saw in this space.

Silver medal: “The Bishop’s Wife” is the 1947 film that inspired 1996’s “The Preacher’s Wife”. Cary Grant plays the angel in this black-and-white classic. I’d suggest watching this version first. It will make you appreciate the 1996 adaptation even more.

Bronze medal: “The Shop Around the Corner.” I’ll be honest, it’s been a long time since I watched this 1940 film, but I remember I liked it — a lot. If you happen to catch it on one of the classic film channels this month, see if it reminds you of the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan “You’ve Got Mail” effort in 1998. Just substitute Jimmy Stewart for Hanks.

Steve Fact O’ The Day As a freshman in college at Bowling Green State University, Steve talked his roommate into jumping out of their dorm window. They lived on the third floor. There was only cement below. “Well, I never thought he’d actually do it,” Steve reportedly said.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. He has never kicked a co-worker (as far as I know).
