Daily Dirt for Jan. 22, 2022

The name is Mahoney. Breathless Mahoney … welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 190 of the Daily Dirt

1. Regular readers of this space know I have a strong affinity toward rather bizarre names, nicknames, etc.

One subject we haven’t tackled since we began this daily venture is the names of movie characters, which is the direction we’re headed today. These are a handful of my all-time favorites.

Gold medal: Breathless Mahoney, who was a key character in “Dick Tracy” (1990), played by Madonna.

Silver medal: Santanico Pandemonium, who was Selma Hayek’s character in the blood-soaked 1996 vampire film “From Dusk Till Dawn”.

Bronze medal: Flipper Purify, the characterWesley Snipes gave life to in “Jungle Fever” (1991).

Honorable mention: Honey Rider, She was the first of the Bond girls, played by Ursula Andress in “Dr. No” (1962).Truly Scrumptious: This was Sally Ann Howes’ character in “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (1968).Vermithrax Pejorative:For those who saw “Dragonslayer” (1981), you probably remember this as the name of the dragon in question.

We’ll be adding to this list in the coming weeks, months and years.

2. Remember the movie “Soylent Green” (1973)?

If you have never heard of the film and/or are unaware of the storyline you might want to look all of that up. Oh, and one other thing … it was set in 2022.

3. I saw an interesting report earlier this week, concerning the worst teams in the NFL ‘s modern era, which is considered since 1978 when the league went from a 14- to 16-game schedule.

The top three were:

1. 2008 Detroit Lions (0-16): Rod Marinelli was the coach of this inept bunch, which was led — so to speak — by quarterback Daunte Culpepper and receiver Calvin Johnson.

2. 2017 Cleveland Browns (0-16): The Browns of coach Hue Jackson scored the fewest points and gave up the second most. Yep, this club was legitimately horrible. The coach was the legendary Hue Jackson. The quarterback was the equally legendary DeShone Kizer.

3. 2016 Cleveland Browns (1-15): I’m a lifelong Browns fan and even I don’t remember Cody Kessler, who apparently quarterbacked this bumbling brood for at least part of the season. Jackson coached this disaster, too.

Other notable teams on the list:

5. 2009 St. Louis Rams (1-15): Running back Steven Jackson was a bright spot, arguably THE bright spot.

15. 2008 St. Louis Rams (2-14): Kind of hard to believe the Rams went downhill in 2009 from this club.

18. 2011 St. Louis Rams (2-14): Obviously, this was a challenging era for the Rams.

Steve Fact O’ The Day Steve said if his family had ever included another girl, he would have likely named her Breathless: Geoff, Sarah, Kaysi, Melissa and … Breathless.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. He said Soylent Green tasted like chicken.
