Hannibal student wins best of show in Quincy Art Center’s high school art competition

QUINCY — The winners of the 48th annual High School Student Art Competition at the Quincy Art Center recently were announced.

Submission for the competition was open to high school artists in grades 9-12 from 20 counties. One hundred works of art were selected from those submitted for the Art Center’s latest exhibit. The juror for the competition was Michael Omichi Quintero, a professor of art at St. Louis Community College on its Florissant Valley campus. Grace Kirby of Hannibal (Mo.) High School earned best of show for her piece, “Coca-Cola.” Dalphna Rainbolt of Pittsfield High School earned second place for her piece, “My Happy Place.” Mariana Tecpanecatl of Fort Madison (Iowa) High School took third place for her piece, “Faceless.”

Merit awards were given to Jocelyn Dorsey of Hannibal High School for her piece, “Cafe Music,” and Elaina Dyke of Hannibal High School for her piece, “Tree-Pot.”

Honorable mention was given to:

• Ichrak Abboud, “Tea Time,” Fort Madison High School;
• Khloee Hinton, “Livin’ Like Larry,” Hannibal High School;
• Seth Miller, “Cricket,” Logan Private Studio

Great River Watercolor Society Awards were given to:

• Aunastasiea Anderson, “Shroom,” Fort Madison High School
• Molly Springer, “Frozen Snow,” Pittsfield High School

Special Recognition Awards were given to:

• Madison Meyer, “Two Pears in a Pod,” Fort Madison High School
• Kathryn Moyers, “Kleos (The Goddess of Empowerment),” Highland High School
• Daneille Welte, “Chubs and Ribs,” Highland High School

The Art Center also was the host of the fifth annual High School Art Teacher Exhibit. All high school visual art teachers with students who entered the high school competition were eligible to enter. The winner was Dana Smith of Fort Madison High School for her piece, “Warrior.’ Smith was awarded $300 to use toward the purchase of art supplies, art equipment or an art lesson brought to the classroom by the Art Center.

Exhibit Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art Center is at 1515 Jersey. Art Center exhibits are always free and open to the public.
