NORMAL, Ill. — Abbey Schreacke stood at the free-throw line without any of her Quincy Notre Dame teammates filling the lane.

They were too busy celebrating along the sideline.

Schreacke’s two free throws with four seconds put a cap on an epic 35-point performance and finished off a 63-56 victory over Winnebago on Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A state championship game at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena.

With a state championship medal dangling from her neck following the trophy celebration, Schreacke soaked in the moment. 

“It means a lot of hard work and blood, sweat and tears,” said Schreacke, the all-state junior guard. “It took a lot to get here. We had a lot of turmoil, and overcoming what we did and finishing it like this, it’s all worth it.”

The Raiders finish with a 30-3 record after winning the sixth state championship in program history. 

It is the fourth title in Eric Orne’s 20-year coaching tenure and one of the most emotionally tough and satisfying seasons he has experienced.

“It was a complete effort from November,” Orne said. “We had some hills and we had some valleys, and these guys just pulled through. I am incredibly, incredibly amazed by what they can do when they stick in that huddle and come out as a team every time.”
