QUINCY — From precinct committeemen to governor, candidates for elected office in 2022 made their way to courthouses and elections offices across Illinois on Monday.

It is filing day for those who seek to be on the June 28 primary ballot.

For those seeking state and federal offices, they stood in line outside the Illinois State Board of Elections headquarters, located in an old shopping center on Springfield’s west side.

The Adams County Courthouse had a large line of candidates waiting to enter before County Clerk Ryan Niekamp opened the doors at 8:30 a.m. Candidates can file during courthouse office hours until Monday, March 14 at 5 p.m. The courthouse closes at 4:30 on all other regular business days.

Candidates for each office have to produce a certain amount of signatures on their petitions. The number of signatures needed ranges from a handful for precinct committeemen to thousands for state and federal offices.

Many of the people in line in Quincy this morning were filing for precinct committeeman, including Quincy Mayor Mike Troup, who was among the early risers.

Precinct committeemen elect the chairmen of each respective political party in each county in Illinois. Each precinct can have a Republican and a Democratic committeeman, but not all seats are always filled.

Many committeemen are elected, but the party can appoint committeemen for precincts with no representation and appointees do not have to live in the precincts they represent.

Candidates for sheriff and Adams County Board were also some of the first to arrive Monday morning.

Niekamp said the County Clerk’s Website would be updated with each day’s filings. Muddy River News will post the filings as well.
