Daily Dirt for Thursday, March 31, 2022

Muddy River News Minister of Culture and Doctor of LoveI have to say, I like that Pam Beesly character … Welcome to Vol. 248 of The Daily Dirt.

1. March is Women’s History Month, so before head into April here are some medal-worthy memorable words from some memorable women:

Gold medal: “I’m not offended by blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb. And I also know that I’m not blonde.” — Dolly Parton.

Silver medal: “I don’t care what they say about me. I just want to eat.” —Pam Beesly, “The Office”.

Bronze medal: “Crying is for plain women. Pretty women go shopping.” — Blanche Devereaux, “The Golden Girls”.

2. We continue our preseason look at the six MLB divisions. Today we tour the National League West:

Order of finish: 1. Los Angeles, 2. San Francisco, 3. San Diego, 4. Arizona, 5. Colorado.

Why: The Dodgers have the potential to run away and hide in this division. There is the makings of a super team in Los Angeles, where there is a potential offensive juggernaut and a pitching staff second to none. Look for San Francisco to slide back from that unexpected 100-plus win season, and San Diego has to figure out how to survive until injured Fernando Tatis Jr, can return. Arizona and Colorado should both be in AAA.

NL West MVP: With Tatis Jr. sidelined for a couple of months, I am vaulting the Dodgers’ charismatic Mookie Betts into the favorite’s role. Freddie Freeman may be a good bet, too, if he can get off to a decent start.

NL West Cy Young: Walker Buehler, Dodgers.

Best manager: Bob Melvin, Padres. This is his first year in San Diego after a long, successful run in Oakland.

Best uniforms: Padres’ home look is outstanding, although the road grays are a bit drab.

3. This week’s Great Plate medal winners across West-Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri:

Gold medal: HAYES 73. An Ohio State football fan? In 1973, Woody Hayes led the Bucks to a 10-0-1 national championship season.

SIlver medal: STRAT 5. A Strat-O-Matic baseball fan? “Strat” is the best — and most realistic –baseball game ever invented.

Bronze medal: B CN U 42. I applaud the effort, although it took me awhile to figure it out. Will any crack next week’s top 10 for the year?
