QUINCY, Ill. — United Way of Adams County and the National Association of Letter Carriers are teaming up for the 30th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” National Food Drive on Saturday, May 14, to benefit local food pantries and the residents of Adams County who face hunger daily.

In a press release, Amanda Veihl, Quincy Postal Carrier and local NALC organizer, said, “The need in Adams County continues to be great, especially after the past few years that we’ve had. Our goal this year is to carry on from our past successes, gathering more than our total in 2019 of 23,500 pounds of food collected in Adams County.”

The “Stamp out Hunger” effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Simply leave a sturdy plastic or brown paper bag containing non-perishable foods like canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox before the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 14.

Food items should be in non-breakable containers. Local letter carriers and volunteers will collect donations from homes, and the food will be distributed to local food pantries in Adams County.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 38 million people, including 12 million children, in the United States are food insecure. The pandemic has increased food insecurity among families with children, who already faced hunger at much higher rates before the pandemic.

Jenna Hull, director of programs and services at United Way of Adams County said, “The Stamp Out
Hunger food drive is one of the easiest ways for you to help these individuals in need. Placing just one bag of food by your mailbox makes a huge impact.”
