Ferris Bueller's Day off (1986) Paramount

Daily Dirt for Monday, May 9, 2022

In case you didn’t know, Harry S. Truman always had a way with words … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 281 of The Daily Dirt.

1. The weather reports say it’s going to be quite warm this week, which is awesome. I am tired of rain, cold weather, drizzle, temperatures in the 30s and 40s, etc.

I want to sweat and I want to walk outside not needing a hoodie. The following three quotes will likely sum up the coming four or five days:

Gold medal: “Never kick a fresh turd on a hot day.” – Harry S. Truman. (Actually, on any other day either.)

Silver medal: “I love summertime more than anything else in the world. That is the only thing that gets me through the winter, knowing that summer is going to be there.” — actor Jack McBrayer. (I agree wholeheartedly with this. The only thing that gets me through the winters are warm weather — and knowing baseball will be returning.)

Bronze medal: “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” — Audrey Hepburn. (I’ve obviously never planted a garden in my life, but I completely agree with Audrey’s thought.)

2. How about these films for the best movies to get us in the mood for summer?

  • 1. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986): When the Beatles” “Twist and Shout” plays, that may very well be one of the top 20 most memorable moments in all of filmdom. And let’s be honest, didn’t we all want a friend like Ferris Bueller?
  • 2. “Dirty Dancing” (1987): As everyone knows, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” R.I.P., Patrick Swayze.
  • 3. “Jaws” (1975): To this day, this movie scares me. I know what’s coming, yeah the shark looks kind of fake … but there’s no way if I ever make a second trip to New England that I am going in the water or on a boat.
  • 4. “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983): Thirty-nine years later, it’s still worth watching. Thank you, Chevy Chase.
  • 5. “Clueless” (1995): Alicia Silverstone’s finest hour. (Well, probably more like an hour and a half.)

3. Finishing off our hot-weather theme, this week should be an excellent time for ice cream treats.

Today we’ll deal with milkshakes. Not counting the pedestrian chocolate, vanilla and strawberry milkshakes, these are five best shakes, according to taste.com:

  • 1. Cool mint: For two shakes, drizzle Cottee’s Ice Magic Chocolate Mint around two glasses. Blend one drop of peppermint essence and two drops of green food coloring with the basic milkshake. Divide this between glasses, top with chocolate ice cream and decorate with Nestlé Aero Peppermint Bubbles and a mini-Corinthian wafer.
  • 2. Strawberry marshmallow: Stir 10 pink marshmallows with one tablespoon of milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until melted. Make basic milkshake, then add marshmallow mixture and two tablespoons of strawberry jam to milkshake and blend. Cut three white marshmallows in half. Stick the cut sides to the inside of a tall glass. Pour the milkshake into the glass and top with extra marshmallows.
  • 3. Blueberry cheesecake: Make basic milkshake, then add 1/3 cup of blueberries, two tablespoons of cream cheese and one tablespoon of caster sugar. Blend. Drizzle Cottee’s Ice Magic White Chocolate into a glass. Pour in the blueberry milkshake. Top with whipped cream, extra blueberries and one crumbled Arnott’s Granita biscuit.
  • 4. Raspberry and white chocolate: Dissolve one tablespoon of raspberry jelly crystals with one tablespoon of boiling water. Add one tablespoon of cold water. Pour into a serving glass. Place in fridge for two hours or until set. Dip rim in finely grated white chocolate. Add 70 grams of melted white chocolate to basic milkshake. Blend. Pour over jelly. Serve with a mini pink-iced doughnut.
  • 5. Pina colada: For two shakes, make basic milkshake, swapping the milk for coconut milk. Add one teaspoon of vanilla bean paste, 60 milliliters of Malibu rum and 1/3 cup of pineapple juice. Blend. Pour into two glasses. Top with fresh pineapple.(I think I just gained five pounds simply by reading those recipes.)

Steve Thought O’ The Day — Steve finds it hard to believe Alicia Silverstone is now 45 years old … and she hasn’t had another hit movie in 27 years.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. I find it hard to believe Steve actually wants to sweat.
