Judge sets bond for Graff at $100,000 in aggravated criminal sexual abuse case

QUINCY — Judge Tad Brenner set the bond at $100,000 for a Quincy man charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Jonathan Graff, 31, made his first appearance Monday afternoon in Adams County Circuit Court, wearing an orange and white jumpsuit while handcuffed and wearing shackles around his ankles. He was arrested Thursday night and is lodged in the Adams County Jail.

Graff has been an assistant coach on the girls basketball team at Quincy Notre Dame for six years, and he also coaches youth boys and girls basketball teams with the Tri-State Legacy, an AAU program. He has been an employee of the TAP (Total Athlete Performance) program at 3032 Broadway for nine years. However, he has been placed on administrative leave.

Court documents allege Graff fondled the sex organ of someone, who was at least 13 years old but under 17 years old, through her clothing for the purpose of his sexual arousal or gratification on or about May 12.

The Quincy Police Department said Friday that officers investigated a possible inappropriate relationship between Graff and a 16-year-old Quincy juvenile, who was interviewed and provided details and other corroborating evidence.

Aggravated criminal sexual abuse is a Class 2 felony, punishable for between three and seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. If found guilty, Graff also could be fined for up to $25,000. He would also be eligible for probation.

Assistant state’s attorney Laura Keck asked that the bond be set at $50,000. Sarah Lucey with the public defender’s office asked for the bond to be set at $15,000 because of Graff’s lack of prior criminal history. Instead, Brenner doubled Keck’s bond request, with 10 percent cash to apply.

Graff also was ordered to have no contact with and stay 1,000 feet away from the victim as well as the Kroc Center. He will not be allowed unsupervised conduct with any other minor child.

“That will mean staying away from the public schools, Quincy Notre Dame and the Quincy University athletic center,” Brenner said. “Those places will be off limits. I appreciate that could potentially affect your employment due to the nature of the charges.”

Graff told Brenner he intends to hire his own attorney. His next appearance in court was set for June 1.
