Preliminary hearing before grand jury set for Graff

QUINCY — A Quincy man accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl will go before a grand jury.

Jonathan Graff, 31, appeared Wednesday morning in Adams County Circuit Court with his attorney Drew Schnack. Assistant state’s attorney Laura Keck and Schnack discussed the case’s next steps before Judge Tad Brenner.

Schnack said a grand jury will hear the information, and Graff will be in court again on June 22. Graff has not posted his $100,000 bond and remains in the Adams County Jail. Clad in orange and white prison garb, Graff made a brief appearance in the courtroom before being taken back to jail.

Graff was arrested on May 19, one week after it was alleged he fondled the sex organ of a girl, who was at least 13 years old but under 17 years old, through her clothing for the purpose of his sexual arousal or gratification. The Quincy Police Department confirmed officers investigated a possible inappropriate relationship between Graff and a 16-year-old Quincy girl, who was interviewed and provided details and other corroborating evidence.

Graff was an assistant coach on the girls basketball team at Quincy Notre Dame for six years, and he also coaches youth boys and girls basketball teams with the Tri-State Legacy, an AAU program. If Graff were to post bond, Brenner ordered him to have no contact with and stay 1,000 feet away from the victim, as well as the Kroc Center, and have no unsupervised conduct with any other minor child.

Aggravated criminal sexual abuse is a Class 2 felony, punishable for between three and seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. If found guilty, Graff also could be fined for up to $25,000. He would also be eligible for probation.
