Quincy man facing two felony charges after May 30 crash that killed woman now jailed on $250,000 bond
QUINCY — A Quincy man who had been in Blessing Hospital since May 30 with injuries he sustained in a crash at 12th and Locust now is lodged in the Adams County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon on a $250,000 bond.
Kayla Smith, 39, was killed in a two-car crash at 8:27 a.m. May 30 when the Kia Sorento she was driving allegedly was hit by a 1999 Ford Ranger truck driven by Breeden J. Wike, 20, of 840 State. An investigation revealed Wike’s truck was westbound and ran a red light at 12th and Locust, hitting the southbound Kia Sorento.
Wike was not immediately charged because he was hospitalized. Adams County State’s Attorney Gary Farha said Wednesday Wike has been charged with reckless homicide, a Class 3 felony punishable between two and five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, and aggravated reckless driving, a Class 4 felony punishable between one and three years in the DOC.
Farha also said tests to determine Wike’s blood-alcohol level and the amount of cannabis in his system have been sent to a private lab in Chicago. More charges could be forthcoming based on the results of those tests.
