WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Water Resources Development Act of 2022 that was passed Wednesday by the House of Representatives authorizes $50 million for wastewater and stormwater projects in North Missouri — including $3.5 million for the North Street Project in Hannibal, Mo.

A section of downtown Hannibal’s stormwater system collapsed in 2019, nearly flooding part of the city’s downtown.

“Part of this system near the levee was fixed by the Corps of Engineers, but there’s still more work to be done,” said Sam Graves, U.S. representative for Missouri’s 6th congressional district and a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, in a press release.

“The House’s water resources bill sends a clear message: historic downtown Hannibal is worth protecting for future generations. It authorizes federal funding to fix the rest of this section of aging stormwater system in downtown Hannibal to protect the city from future flood events.”

WRDA 2022 heads to the Senate for further consideration. The program will be subject to appropriations if it is ultimately signed into law.

Graves joined Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee Chair Grace Napolitano (D-CA) and Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee Ranking Member David Rouzer (R-NC) in introducing WRDA last month.
