DAILY DIRT: ‘On the sixth day, God created man, the sort of result you often get when you go in to work on a Saturday’

Steve's glaring omission of Sir Elton John cannot be ignored.

Daily Dirt for Saturday, July 30, 2022

I kind of lean toward Alan King’s feelings about what makes Saturday a special day … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 354 of The Daily Dirt.

1. It’s the weekend, a time, I think, men tend to enjoy more than women.

I have no scientific proof of that, only a gut feeling. These are three quotes from people far much smarter than I am backing me up on this:

Gold medal: “Weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.” – cartoonist Bill Watterson

Silver medal:“My favorite way to spend Saturday is in and out of bed, watching sports on TV and eating.” – comedian Alan King

Bronze medal:“On the sixth day, God created man, the sort of result you often get when you go in to work on a Saturday.” – author Robert Brault.

2. Of course, not everyone shares the same feelings about Saturday and what role it (and the rest of the weekend) should hold in our lives:

“Honestly, I never really understood the glorification of Fridays & weekends. I don’t want to build a life and career, where I spent five days a week waiting for the weekend. No! I want to enjoy my life, and don’t wish any weekday away. I want each day to matter to me, in some way, even if it’s a small tiny way. I love my life. Everyday. That’s the spirit we should convey all around us.” – German economist Akilnathan Logeswaran.

I would guess Logeswaran would be a bundle of joy to invite to a Saturday night cookout.

3. Keeping with our Saturday theme, these are the best songs featuring that wonderful day of the week:

1. “Saturday Night,” by the Bay City Rollers: One of the best singa-alongs. Ever.

2. “Another Saturday Night,” by Sam Cooke: One of the best voices of any generation and/or genre.

3. “Another Saturday Night,” by Cat Stevens: Same song, just a different take.

4. “Saturday In The Park,” by Chicago: One of the songs that helped elevate Chicago to supergroup status.

5. “Louisiana Saturday Night,” by Mel McDaniel: Yeah, it’s country, but it’s still a great song. I always thought Mary Chapin Carpenter should have sang with him on this number.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Boy, did Steve whiff on this one…he forgot Sir Elton’s offering. JRG
