DAILY DIRT: Age is just a number, right?
Denzel is 67, Christie is 68, Martha is 81. Where did all the years go? … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 378 of The Daily Dirt.
1. I’m frequently amazed at how old some celebrities are these days. At times, I think I must have slept through an entire decade — or two. Here are 10 prime examples and a few bonus entries:
- 1. Denzel Washington, 67: He’s been a star for more than 40 years.
- 2. Chris Rock, 57: Despite the advanced years, he proved earlier this year he can still take a punch.
- 3. Christie Brinkley, 68: Her current net worth is a reported $100 million. Apparently, the swimsuit business paid pretty well.
- 4. Mariah Carey, 53: “Love Takes Time” is my favorite Mariah effort. The video was great, too. (Of course, I called it up to play after typing this and noticed it has been played more than 53 million times on YouTube.)
- 5. Keanu Reeves, 57: The Matrix guy was born in Beirut and grew up in Canada.
- 6. Halle Berry, 56: She was once Miss Teen Ohio.
- 7. Martha Stewart, 81: She was born Martha Kostrya.
- 8. Juila Louis-Dreyfus, 60: One of the former gang of four on “Seinfeld,” she owns 11 Emmys.
- 9. Jennifer Lopez, 53: Despite being the music business for more than 20 years, J-Lo has only toured twice. So she has more engagement rings than concert tours.
- 10. Vanna White, 65: She has been spinning those letters on “Wheel of Fortune” since 1982.
Other notables
- Drew Barrymore, 47: She’s been acting since she was 11. Her first “role” was in a Puppy Chow commercial.
- Samuel L. Jackson, 73: He studied to be a marine biologist at Morehouse College.
- Sandra Bullock, 58: Strange but true — Bullock has not appeared on network TV in more than a decade.
- Michelle Pfeiffer, 64: One of my all-time favorite actresses.
- Ellen DeGeneres, 64: Remember when she was a judge on “American Idol” — for one season? She replaced Paula Abdul, supposedly for five years, but exited after the first season.
- Cher, 76: Her real name is Cherilyn Sarkisian.
- Britney Spears, 41: In some regards, it seems like she should be 141.
2. This week, we’re wishing happy birthday to the following:
- Actor Paul Reubens turns 70 on Saturday. You may know him better as Pee Wee Herman.
- Singer Shania Twain will be 62 on Saturday. One of my life’s regrets is never seeing her in concert.
- The late, great Michael Jackson would have been 64 on Saturday.
- Singer Van Morrison will be 77 on Wednesday. Can we all sing “Brown-Eyed Girl” together?
- If alive today, MLB Hall of Famer Frank Robinson would have been 87 on Wednesday. I was fortunate enough to interview Robinson shortly after he was named manager of the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first Black manager in MLB history. “Robby” was the consummate gentleman — and hitter.
3. Today’s little-known fact from pop music history:
Call this two-for-one day. First , the artists with the most consecutive No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100:
- Whitney Houston, 7 (1985-88).
- The Beatles, 6 (1964-66).
- Bee Gees, 6 (1977-79).
Secondly, the most hits to reach No. 2 (but never made it No. 1):
- Elvis Presley, 6.
- Madonna, 6.
- Taylor Swift, 6.
- Carpenters, 5.
- Creedence Clearwater Revival, 5.
