QHS freshman athletes to test new PE class
QUINCY – The Quincy School Board approved a plan for a new physical education class for freshman athletes at Quincy High School.
The class is for one hour per day and will focus on strength and weight training, flexibility, yoga, fitness, agility and leadership. It is optional for student-athletes and not required.
The proposal, presented by QHS Principal Jody Steinke and PE Teacher Andy Douglas, calls for up to 75 freshman to enroll per semester. Out-of-season semester athletes will receive 1/2 PE credit and 1/2 sports leadership elective credit. In-season semester athletes will receive 1/2 PE credit.
If the program proves successful, it could expand to the upper grade levels.
In other action, with two new board members following the April election, Board President Sayeed Ali issued new committee co-chair assignments:
- Finance: Richard McNay and Carol Nichols
- Building: McNay and Jim Whitfield
- Policy: Whitfield and Rachel Petty
- Human Resources: Nichols and LaTonya Brock
- District Improvement: Shelley Arns and Petty
And the Board recognized long-time Board Secretary and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Phyllis Stewart, who attended her final Board meeting before she retires at the end of the month. Stewart served QSD 172 for 27 years under seven superintendents.
Kim Wert has transferred from Lincoln-Douglas Elementary and will succeed Stewart.
