PITTSFIELD, Ill. – John E. Resor of Quincy was sentenced Wednesday in Pike County Circuit Court to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for an aggravated domestic battery committed on March 19 in Barry.

Judge Charles H.W. Burch also sentenced Resor to concurrent 10-year sentences on two counts of aggravated battery. Resor must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence for aggravated domestic battery.

A Pike County jury returned verdicts of guilty on Oct. 13 on charges of aggravated domestic battery by strangulation, and two counts of aggravated battery committed on or about a public way. The jury returned a not guilty verdict on one additional count of aggravated battery committed on or about a public way.

Pike County State’s Attorney Zachary Boren and Assistant State’s Attorney Leecia Carnes represented the state. Jury selection began Oct. 11. The jury deliberated for one hour and 49 minutes.

Deputy Steve Snyder from the Pike County Sheriff’s Department was the lead investigator in the case. District 20 with the Illinois State Police provided assistance. Boren said a good Samaritan from Barry came to the aid of the victim and provided key testimony at trial.

“I want to thank all the people who worked hard on this case,” Boren said in a press release. “The Pike County Sheriff’s Department did great work, as always, but special thanks goes out to the good Samaritan who stepped into a bad situation at just the right moment. Without the help of that person, this situation could have been much worse. It’s that kind of care for each other that makes Pike County a great place to live.”

Resor has 30 days to file a notice of appeal.
