‘Teen Takeover’ high school art exhibit to open Saturday at Quincy Art Center

QUINCY — Quincy Art Center invites the public to “Teen Takeover,” a high school art exhibit, on Saturday, Jan. 28. Viewing of the artwork will be from 1-3 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. when cash awards and scholarships from visiting universities will be presented. A complimentary lunch will be provided by Zoup.

A record 375 pieces of artwork from 20 schools were entered into the Quincy Art Center’s 49th annual high school art competition. That number represents about 100 more than has been entered in previous exhibits. The public can view the 100 pieces chosen for the competition.

Representatives from Quincy University, Culver-Stockton College, Hannibal-LaGrange University, University of Missouri, Truman State University and University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana will be available to talk to students about their respective art programs.

The sixth annual art teacher exhibit also will be on display Saturday. The Art Center received 14 pieces of art from high school art teachers. One teacher will win an award for classroom art supplies.

Artist Madeleine LeMieux from Columbia, Mo., was the juror for the show. LeMieux received a degree in fine arts with an emphasis in art history, theory and criticism from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007, a master’s degree in visual arts administration from New York University in 2011 and a master’s degree in painting from the University of Missouri in 2021. She has been exhibiting her artwork and using art as a tool for community organizing since 2004. LeMieux is the Art on the Move coordinator and instructor at the School of Visual Studies at the University of Missouri.

The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 22. The Art Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit quincyartcenter.org or call 217-223-5900.
