Letter to the Editor: People by and large still trust their local media
It’s too bad Mike Miletich is no longer with WGEM. His presence in Springfield was a real asset for the station. He is a solid reporter with great on-air presence. He gave viewers insight into state issues which we lacked until he came on board.
Mike’s use of the word “hate” is over the top from most viewers, but not all. The fact people don’t like or mistrust the media is a general application that is probably true. Many people I encounter believe media reporting is not objective. I think that’s an opinion aimed at the national media. People by and large still trust their local stations.
I understand WGEM’s need to disagree and distance itself from Mike’s comments. I also think WGEM, KHQA, WTAD, etc., are in good standing with their audience. Local media needs to strive hard to maintain their objectivity and distance themselves from the national outlets.
My comments on the media are focused on traditional broadcast news, which is my background. I think the mistrust label also applies to major print media. I think local print media has been decimated and doesn’t figure into any review.
The best story is news reporting I totally overlooked: Muddy River News. Muddy River News is innovative and leads the pack in local news reporting in Quincy. The experience of the staff is apparent in MRN’s content, which is solid, dependable and objective. MRN is the future of news reporting.
