Daily Dirt: Hair bands, life before ESPN and walking on the moon

Whitesnake-Here-I-Go-Again

Tawny Kitaen, 1961-2021

Daily Dirt for July 21, 2021

The Daily Dirt marches on … welcome to Vol. 13:

1. Best hair bands ever? How about these?

A. Bon Jovi: After all of these years, still livin’ on a prayer.

B. Cinderella: The critics loved this bunch, but not much mainstream acceptance. Lead singer Tom Keifer is one of the genre’s all-time most underrated stars. Former Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar recently died at the relatively young age of 58.

C. Whitesnake: Not known by all, but front man David Coverdale came to this band from Deep Purple.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Steve…no love for Tawny Kitaen, who famously waxed Coverdale’s car in the “Here I Go Again” video? Tawny was married to Coverdale and then to former MLB pitcher Chuck Finley. She just passed in May at the age of 58. We regret Steve’s omission. JRG

2. It was about this time of the summer in 1979 that many of our lives were about to change forever. ESPN was getting ready to launch. (Yes, for those reading this who are not a baby boomer, there was once life without ESPN. Life wasn’t pretty back then, but somehow we were able to survive until Chris Berman, Beano Cook, Gayle Gardner and Tim Brando arrived.)

3. I doubt it receives much attention, but it was 52 years yesterday when astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. Fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin also walked on the moon’s surface, 19 minutes after Armstrong had made his historic first steps.
