MONROE CITY, Mo – Monroe City voters approved the $6.7 million bond to benefit the Monroe City R-I elementary school in Tuesday’s election.

The money will be used to complete the south wing of the school by adding 11 classrooms to house grades 1-4, hallways and two full sets of restrooms.

The bond will also pay to renovate the old elementary school.

Renovation of old elementary school will include:

  • Plumbing, subfloor structure, HVAC, electrical, roofing, exterior doors and windows, exterior lighting,  interior doors, interior ceiling, interior flooring, LED lighting, technology not limited to hard connections and wireless access, upgrade to security features not limited to automated door accesses, cameras and campus communications via speakering.
  • Fire alarm system upgrade
  • Restrooms must be ADA compliant with epoxy flooring finish

The school district is also interested in renovating space in the old existing elementary school into a multipurpose room to house pre-k through 6th grade physical education classes.

Monroe City R-I Superintendent Tony DeGrave said the support from the community is appreciated and not surprising.

“I am not shocked by the support but just really grateful for our community to move forward with projects like this and to always be supported by our taxpayers,” he said. “It is a reflection of the ongoing commitment and support of our community members and taxpayers towards the progressiveness of the school district.”

DeGrave said the district will now move forward with an engineer and architect to obtain drawings and a pre-bid spec so contractors can come in and they can move forward. He expects the work to begin in 2024.
