Police use tear gas to force man out of car he had barricaded himself in car at 25th and Oak

QUINCY — Tear gas was used to help force a man out of the car he had barricaded himself in for nearly five hours on Friday. He was taken into custody.

Quincy Police had set up barricades on North 25th Street between Spring and Oak, telling people to watch for crossfire Friday afternoon as they dealt with a man who had barricaded himself in a car and claimed he has a weapon.

Deputy Chief Shannon Pilkington said U.S. Marshals tried at 2:30 p.m. Friday to serve an arrest warrant on Jason McEntee for aggravated battery with strangulation in Missouri. He also has a parole warrant in Missouri for the same violation. 

When an arrest attempt was made, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving McEntee inside the vehicle. U.S. Marshals surrounded the vehicle and asked for assistance. That’s when officers from the Quincy Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene.

“The marshal actually is an Adams County sheriff’s deputy assigned to the U.S. Marshals, so Adams County actually is in charge of the scene,” Pilkington said during the standoff. “We are assisting them as we can at this time.”

Negotiators with the Sheriff’s Department talked with McEntee for nearly four hours to coax him out of the vehicle. Pilkington said no one was injured.

Pilkington said McEntee implied he had a weapon and had stated he would shoot the officers.”

The Yum Factory, 25th and Broadway, had locked its doors but is allowing customers to enter and leave the building. Other businesses in the area were operating as normal.

Instructions for law enforcement officers telling onlookers near 25th and Spring to return to their homes could be heard on police scanner traffic.
