Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County

QUINCY — The Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County will hold its annual meeting beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 25, in the History Museum on the Square, 332 Maine.

The agenda will consist of the election of officers and directors; approval of the annual financial report; approval of the budget for the upcoming year; a report by the society’s president; and standing committee reports on such areas as building and grounds, exhibits, programs and education.

Following the meeting, at approximately 2 p.m., Quincy University’s Justin Coffey will present a program on Quincyan Col. George Iles. He graduated from Quincy High School and enrolled in Quincy College. While still enrolled, he earned a private pilot’s license under the Civilian Pilot Training Program, making him Quincy’s first black pilot. He became a U.S. Army Air Force officer and served as a combat fighter pilot with the 332nd Fighter Group’s 99th Fighter Squadron, best known as the Tuskegee Airmen or Red Tails.

George J. Iles Elementary School in Quincy, opened in August 2018, was named in his honor.

The meeting and program are both free and open to members of the organization as well as the public.
