Quincy Public Library receives $300,000 from estate of longtime Quincy teacher

QUINCY – Quincy Public Library learned on May 15 it was named one of the beneficiaries of the Nona G. Long Estate and received donation of $300,000.  

This contribution will impact the library’s ability to expand its programs, enhance its collections and further its mission of fostering lifelong learning and community engagement.  

Long’s career in education totaled 38 years, beginning in Quincy in 1963. She taught American and British Literature at Quincy High School, retiring in 1993. After retirement, Long tutored in the alternative school and taught adult extension classes in literature and classic film.

Long died on June 1, 2022, at age 81.

“This generous donation will empower us to ensure that quality resources will continue to be offered to the Quincy community,” said Kathleen Helsabeck, director of the Quincy Public Library, in a press release. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the late Nona G. Long for her exceptional foresight and belief in the transformative power of public libraries.” 

With its extensive collection of books, multimedia resources and educational programs, the library has served as a vital resource for residents.  The press release said the estate donation will serve as a catalyst for “even greater possibilities,” allowing the library to strengthen its services and broaden its reach within the community. 

The Mary Weems Barton Quincy Public Library Foundation also expressed its appreciation to Long for her generosity and support. The library also wishes to extend its gratitude to the attorneys and executors of the estate for facilitating this donation.
