Hannibal man in custody on $100,000 bond after stealing Quincy Police Department squad car and taking it to Hannibal

QUINCY — A Hannibal, Mo., man is being held in the Marion County Jail after he allegedly stole a Quincy Police Department squad car Monday morning but later was apprehended in Hannibal.

A press release from the Quincy Police Department said Marcus McGruder, 46, had been loitering in the Quincy Police Department parking lot for more than 30 minutes, then broke the driver’s side window of a locked QPD squad car and entered the vehicle at approximately 7:51 a.m.  Finding the keys in the vehicle, McGruder drove out of the parking lot and headed west over the Bayview Bridge into Missouri.  

Officers tracked the vehicle using on-board technology. Missouri law enforcement officers were notified of the theft and the location of the squad car.  Once located, McGruder fled from Missouri authorities until he was eventually apprehended by members of the Hannibal Police Department in Hannibal without incident.

McGruder is in the Marion County Jail on $100,000 cash bond for tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting arrest by fleeing, unlawful possession of a firearm and stealing a firearm.  There also is an Adams County arrest warrant with a $50,000 bond for theft of government property of more than $10,000 and theft of a law enforcement vehicle.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. The damage to the Quincy Police vehicle was isolated to the broken window.  The squad car’s rifle was found secured in the squad car’s secure rifle lock mechanism.
