DAILY DIRT: Who was better than Bo?

Daily Dirt for Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2023

And today we also pay tribute to the late, great Vesta Stoudt … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 697 of The Daily Dirt.

1. Here’s our latest edition of “Strange Laws” that are still on the books.

Today’s medal-worthy edition has an international flavor.

Gold medal: You are not permitted to poop on a bridge in Australia. If you do, you will be deported.

Silver medal: If you chew gum in Singapore, you face a $2,000 fine. The chewing gum ban was implemented “to eradicate problems created by chewing-gum litter in public places like cinemas, parks and common areas of housing estates such as lifts, staircases and corridors, as well as the high costs involved to clean up the litter.”

Bronze medal: If you die in China, but come back to life … that is illegal. And you will be sent to jail. (But what if you die, come back to life and and chew gum while pooping on a bridge?)

2. Forgotten Illinois hero

Those of us who live in Illinois should never forget the contribution of Vesta Stoudt, a native of Prophetstown who died in 1966. Stoudt came up with the concept of what we now call duct tape while working at a World War II factory where she specialized packing and inspecting ammunition boxes. Stoudt’s hometown, situated in the northwest corner of the state, is also well known for its impressive Fourth of July fireworks celebration.

3. Food for thought

If Bo Jackson’s baseball and football careers had not been cut short by assorted injuries, might he have eventually been regarded as the greatest two-sport star in pro sports history?

Consider that in 1989, Jackson hit 32 home runs and drove in 105. Over a four-year span (1987-90), Jackson mashed 107 home runs. During that same four-year period, Jackson rushed for 2,782 yards in just 38 NFL games (due to limited playing time because the MLB and NFL seasons overlapped).
