CHICAGO — Tim Mapes, a Hancock County native whose rose to the pinnacle of power in the State of Illinois as the right hand man to Michael J. Madigan when he served as speaker of the Illinois House, has been found guilty on perjury and obstruction of justice charges by a federal jury.

Mapes, who served as the clerk of the Illinois House, Madigan’s Chief of Staff and executive director of the Illinois Democratic Party simultaneously when Madigan was party chair, was found guilty of lying to a grand jury investigating Madigan and his consigliere, former lobbyist Michael McClain of Quincy.

McClain, who along with three others, was found guilty in May nine counts of conspiracy bribery and falsifying records. His sentencing is set for Jan. 11, 2024. Ironically, Mapes’ sentencing is set for Jan. 10, 2024.

McClain also faces bribery and racketeering charges alongside Madigan. That trial is set for April 2024.

According to Hannah Meisel of Capitol News Illinois, the jury checked all seven boxes for the seven lies Mapes purportedly told during the grand jury testimony regarding the perjury charge. The government only had to prove one of the seven at minimum.

Mapes faces up to 20 years on the obstruction count and up to 5 years on the perjury count. He was granted immunity, but when he lied to the grand jury, that was nullified.
