QFD responds to northside apartment fire

QUINCY — Three Quincy Fire Department engine companies responded to a fire in the 1900 block of Chestnut just after midnight Friday morning.

QFD received a report of smoke coming from an apartment building at 1931 Chestnut which was phoned in by a pizza delivery driver. The Spot, a convenience store and smoke shop, is on the first floor of the two-story structure and multiple apartments are on the second floor.

Engine Company #6 arrived on scene first and reported smoke coming from the roof and attic and was soon assisted at the scene by Engine Company #2, Incident Commander, and Engine Company #4.  Quincy Police were also on scene and checked for any occupants in the other apartments and businesses. 

Engine company #6 made the initial attack on the fire which they located on the second floor in an apartment.  While no people were inside, crews did rescue a small dog from the apartment.  Engine Company #4 took an line to the attic where they worked to extinguish the fire. Engine Company #3 was called also to the scene. Engine company #2 performed ladder operations and a secondary search of the building along with the crew of Engine Company #3.  Crews worked to salvage and protect the property of the businesses located on the ground level by placing tarps over items to prevent water damage.  

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes.  Ameren Electric and Gas assisted at the scene with shutting off the power and gas.  Fire crews were also assisted at the scene by Adams County EMS and QPD Animal Control. 

The attic had heavy fire damage. The second floor had moderate fire, smoke and water damage, and the ground floor businesses had water damage.  There were no reported injuries at the scene and the rescued dog appeared to be fine.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
