Adams County State’s Attorney’s Office warns citizens about telephone scam referring to jury duty
QUINCY — The Adams County State’s Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department and the Adams County Jury Commission, wants to inform the community about a telephone scam taking place in reference to jury duty.
In these calls, people claim to be a representative of either Adams County or the Adams County Sheriff’s Department and inform the person answering the phone that they have missed jury duty. They also inform the person answering the phone that there either will be, or is, an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The caller then requests the person answering the phone meet them in a parking lot to pay an amount of money to resolve the outstanding warrant or to pay the amount over the phone.
This is a scam. No money should be paid online, over the phone or in person to a person to resolve a warrant regarding jury duty.
Missing jury duty can result in a warrant for one’s arrest, but multiple attempts by the Adams County Jury Commission as well as the Adams County Sheriff’s Department will take place before an actual warrant will be issued. If you receive such a call, contact law enforcement. Call the Adams County Jury Commission at 277-2070 if you have any questions regarding jury duty.
