Quincy American Legion Post 37 serves breakfast most mornings. It’s a good fundraiser for the group.

And every Monday a group of local Republicans hold court and start off their week with eggs, coffee and toast and an update on party activities, happenings and gossip.

But a few days ago, the griddle at the Legion Post stopped working, so they needed a new one. But funds are a little tight for the veterans organization.

So one of the Monday morning regulars, Kody Wiewel, spearheaded an effort to replace the stove. John Spake, president of Comstock-Castle Stove who served in the Marines, offered a model that the company made for $4,600 to the Legion for a discounted price of $1,500.

Comstock-Castle has sold its Quincy-made stoves and ovens worldwide and is the oldest stove manufacturer in the United States. The primary business of the company since the first foundry was built in 1846 has been stove manufacturing. The present management of the company is sixth generation of the Castle family, dating back to the American Civil War.

Kody Wiewel presented the money to Post 37 officials Jesus Delgado and Barb Fletcher at this week’s Monday morning breakfast meeting.
