QFD responds to Calftown fire

QUINCY — The Quincy Fire Department’s Engine 2, Engine 4, Engine 5, and Incident Command were dispatched to the 700 block of Kentucky Tuesday afternoon after a report of smoke coming from an apartment building.

Engine Company 2 arrived on scene within 3 minutes and reported fire from the rear of the two-story structure. All other crews arrived on scene shortly after. 

Engine company 2 made an initial attack on the fire which they located on the first floor in an apartment at the rear of the building.  During this time, Engine 4 conducted a search of the entire building to find no occupants, but only a cat and gerbil that were unharmed.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but crews remained on scene for roughly three hours extinguishing hot spots and ventilating the structure.  Ameren Electric assisted at the scene by shutting off the electrical power.  Fire crews were also assisted at the scene by Adams County EMS, Quincy Fire Department Re-Hab Team, Officers from the Quincy Police Department and the American Red Cross.  

This structure, which had the addresses of 718 and 720 Kentucky, housed nine residents in six apartments. Of the six apartments, four were unaffected by fire but due to the lingering effects of the smoke, those residents were in contact with the American Red Cross to find housing for the night. 

Currently, investigators are working with QPD Detectives to determine a cause.
