Daily Dirt: With September approaching, let’s face it: The first snowfall is right around the corner

Daily Dirt for Aug. 30, 2021

The remaining days of August are rapidly disappearing … and hopefully, so is the heat wave. Welcome to Vol 52 of the Daily Dirt and today’s three thoughts:

1. Technically, fall does not begin until Sept. 22, but we all know once you rip off off that August sheet from your nearest calendar that summer is officially over. September translates into a full-fledged return to school, the onset of football, cooler temperatures (at some point), Halloween is just around the corner and so are Thanksgiving and Christmas. Obviously, there will soon be six inches of now on the ground.Here are some other reasons to celebrate the pending arrival of September:

Sept. 4 is “Eat an Extra Dessert Day.” Hmm … I tend to celebrate this particular day more often than just Sept. 4.

Sept. 12 is “National Chocolate Milkshake Day.” Notice there is a week-plus in between “Eat an Extra Dessert Day” and this celebration. That’s no accident

Sept. 15 is “National Eat a Double Cheeseburger Day.” Whoa … only three days after the chocolate milkshake celebration?

Sept. 19 is “International Talk Like A Pirate Day.” I love this day. My wife does not.

Sept. 20 is “National Pepperoni Pizza Day.” Arguably the best holiday of the month. Is there any food better to celebrate than pizza?

Sept. 24 is “National Punctuation Day.” This may have been started in honor of 99 percent of the posts on Facebook. 

2. Yes, it won’t be long until our complaints about those 90-degree temperatures and humidity are replaced with sweaters and leaves falling from those trees in the backyard. When that happens, maybe you can remember these thoughts:

“All at once, summer collapsed into fall.” — Oscar Wilde. (Every year it happens the same way. All of a sudden, summer has vanished.)

“September tries its best to have us forget summer.” — Bernard Williams. (And is usually quite successful at it.)

3. Daily Dirt reader Brian Bay offered the following. He says these are 10 things that require zero talent:

A. Being on time

B. Work ethic.

C. Effort

D. Energy

E. Body language

F. Passion

G. Doing extra

H.  Being prepared

I. Being coachable

J. Attitude

I agree with all of those, Mr. Bay, but as far as the “being on time” selection, I’ve always looked at time as a “suggestion,” not a hard-fast rule. Just ask my wife, or J. Robert Gough.
