High speed chase out of Quincy leads to Shelby County shootout
SHELBY COUNTY, Mo. — A chase that began in Quincy led to two men exchanging gunfire once it ended outside of Clarence.
Just before 8 p m. Wednesday, Northeast Missouri Emergency Communications requested assistance with a suspect who had fled from Adams County Sheriff’s deputies and Quincy Police. Authorities had responded to a call at the McDonald’s on Broadway at 48th Street regarding a report of a man trying to force a woman into his car.
The drive fled from the east end Quincy establishment and made it onto I-172 South, where he was pursued by Adams County deputies until the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge at the Illinois-Missouri border. Authorities then informed law enforcement officers in Missouri that the man was heading their way on U.S. 36.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers spotted the vehicle at 8:16 p.m. west of Hannibal on U.S. 36 westbound and began their pursuit after the subject failed to yield.
Troopers successfully deployed spike strips and the vehicle exited U.S. 36 at Missouri 151 in Clarence before stopping. The driver exited the vehicle armed with a rifle and began firing at troopers. Troopers returned fire striking the suspect. The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
A MSHP trooper was wounded during the exchange of gunfire.. The trooper was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The MSHP Division of Drug and Crime Control is in charge of the investigation. Authorities have not released the name of the trooper or the suspect, but charges are pending.
