HANNIBAL, Mo. – Hannibal Public Schools announced on Thursday afternoon that Susan Johnson will continue to serve as the superintendent for the 2024-25 school year.

Johnson’s decision to stay comes after Roy Webb withdrew from the position on Thursday. Webb, former superintendent of Quincy Public Schools, accepted the position as HPS superintendent on January 25.

“The Board of Education extends their heartfelt gratitude to Susan Johnson for her continued service to the Hannibal community and looks forward to the continued success of Hannibal Public Schools under her leadership,” the statement from Hannibal Public School District read.

“Our top priority is always the safety and well being of our students. As we remain dedicated to delivering the highest quality education and concluding the school year on a high note, we are committed to transparent communication of pertinent district information. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our families and community members for your ongoing support and collaborative efforts that make our district successful.”

Webb, who had previously said the Quincy job would be his last superintendent job, told people who attended Webb’s January news conference that he didn’t handle retirement well.

Webb sent an e-mail to the Hannibal School District staff on Thursday.

“After much thought and prayer, I have informed the Hannibal Board of Education, that I will not be Hannibal’s next superintendent.

“This was the most difficult decision of my life. I am backing out of a commitment I made and disappointing many people. The Hannibal staff is an amazing group. In a short time, I have great respect for you.

“In my 20 years as a superintendent, I feel I have always done what I felt was best for the students, staff, and schools in my charge. HPS will face some unique challenges in the near future. I believe the board needs someone with different skills than I possess. You deserve the best and most prepared leader.”

In a separate communication with Muddy River News, Webb said he believes Johnson is the “perfect person for the tasks ahead.”

“I wish them well. The district is filled with outstanding staff, students and leaders,” Webb said.

Megan Duncan will have more on this story on Friday.
