QUINCY — Firefighters extinguished a fire started by a car in a detached garage in the alley behind the Hardee’s restaurant on Broadway on Monday night.

The Quincy Fire Department reported in a press release that it was alerted at 8:45 p.m. Monday, March 25, to a garage fully engulfed with fire at the rear of 2929 Vermont. It was reported that a car was in the garage. The first crew arrived on scene at 8:47 p.m. and found the detached garage off the alley was fully engulfed with fire. Firefighters deployed a hose line and began extinguishing the flames, making their way around all sides of the garage.

A second fire truck arrived and connected a supply hose from the fire hydrant at 30th and Broadway to the first fire truck. A third fire truck and the incident commander arrived on the scene as the first crew was continuing to work on extinguishment. A Tri-Township Fire Department crew arrived as automatic mutual aid, and a second hose line was deployed to assist in extinguishment. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes.

QFD fire investigators arrived and determined the fire originated in the car but could not determine a specific cause due to extensive damage. The last fire suppression crew left the scene at 10:17 p.m. The fire investigation team left the scene at 11:31 p.m.

QPD shut down North 30th between Broadway and the alley north of Vermont Street. The Adams County Ambulance Service was on the scene in case it was needed. No civilians or firefighters were injured at the scene.

Damage was extensive, and both the garage and the car inside were a total loss. The garage to the west of 2929 Vermont sustained damage in the form of melted vinyl siding due to the heat.

Fifteen firefighters were on the scene from three engines, along with a quint, the assistant chief and two fire investigators.
