Hannibal firm building three-bay development at 3000 Broadway; Hula Bowls to open in June

QUINCY — Construction is underway on a three-bay development at 3000 Broadway.

Hula Bowls will fill one of the three spaces. This will be the second location for Hula Bowls, and both are currently under construction.

The first location opened in Hannibal in May 2023 at 6476 Veterans Road in a small portable building. That location closed, but a new building is under construction for a larger and permanent location. The Hannibal location will reopen on May 18.

Hula Bowls are allergy-friendly and customizable smoothie bowls with toppings such as granola, coconut, fresh fruits and peanut butter. The sorbet-like base is blended with super fruits from the Amazon rainforest and are gluten free, dairy free, organic and contain no added sugars.

Kendel Locke is the owner and founder of Hula Bowls. She is finishing her degree this spring at the University of Tennessee. She is a daughter of David and Sara Locke of Locke & Locke Properties LLC.

Locke & Locke Properties LLC of Hannibal bought two lots at 3000 Broadway for $825,000 on Feb. 23 from Beck Properties, LLC, according to property tax documents filed in the Adams County Recorder’s Office.

Trevor Beck is the agent and president of Beck Properties, Inc., of Loraine, which bought the property at 3000 Broadway — once home of the China Inn — on Dec. 9, 2022, for $190,000 from Ruth and Connie Liu of Quincy. Beck Properties also bought the neighboring property to the south, 330 N. 30th (once home of a Dollar General store), from Quincy 330 LLC for $360,000. The buildings on both properties were razed, and both lots were sold to Locke & Locke.

She said the new building on Broadway will have two other open spaces — which could be merged into one space, depending on what type of business goes in there. The development will face North 30th Street, with Hula Bowls being in the closest bay to Broadway.

Kendel Locke said looks forward to the expected completion date of the building in June, which is being built by J&N Construction of Quincy.

“We are just getting started, and they have been great to work with,” she said.

Locke said she is looking forward to when both locations are up and running, and expects to see menu updates along the way.

“We are always looking for ways to expand our menu while staying allergy friendly,” Kendel Locke said.
