New food box program for local veterans available this week from Salvation Army of Hannibal

HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Salvation Army of Hannibal and VFW Auxiliary have a new program for local veterans, Service for Sacrifice, a food box appreciation program.

The appreciation box will contain proteins, soups, veggies and options for a quick meal. Each box will contain a special treat donated by the local Girl Scout organization and include resources specific to veterans. 

Service for Sacrifice distribution will occur the second whole week of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. at VFW Post 2446, 209 Bird. The first distribution event will occur on May 14, 15 and 16 with boxes available while supplies last.

“The goal of this program is to create an opportunity in our community specific to our servicemen and women,” case worker Amanda Bowen said in a press release. “Hopefully, we can connect them to other veterans in our area for friendship and support.”

 The Salvation Army began this program with a donation received from the Hannibal Rotary Club.

“We are hopeful that others will be eager to also thank our veterans with a donation of $25 (the cost of each appreciation box),” Donor Relations coordinator Chad Douglas said in a press release. “We ask that donors include a note of thanks, encouraging words or prayers to the recipient with that donation.”
