HANNIBAL, Mo. — The George H. Riedel Foundation has awarded a $6,000 matching grant to Bluff City Theater to engage students in the performing arts. Donations to Bluff City Theater will be matched up to $6,000 to fund the youth theater camp.

The YETI program (Youth Education Theater Initiative) will use the Riedel grant to fully fund two-week summer theater camps, designed for students ages 5-19. Soon after the dates were announced for the camps, all the spots were filled and there is now a wait list. To meet the high demand, Bluff City has added another camp for students aged 13-19.

In a press release, YETI youth coordinator Roland Meisler said, “We believe that all children benefit from the exercise of creative expression regardless of experience, background or natural talent. Theater arts help children overcome shyness and fear and encourage collaboration and friendships. Many children benefit from just experiencing the freedom and joy that comes with play-acting.”

Riedel Foundation lead trustee Michael Bukstein said, “A major focus of our grant awards revolves around children. We have also been big supporters of the arts in Hannibal for more than two decades. This grant that introduces theater to students brings those interests together.”

In the camp for 5-9 year olds, participants will learn all the basics of theatre, including acting for the stage and voice dynamics. They will put on a one-act play on the last day of camp.

The older students will learn all aspects of theater, including character work, auditioning, acting workshops, history of theater, and technical skills. The second week of camp will involve a five-day rehearsal process where the campers will put on a one-act play the last day of camp.
