St. Louis man who illegally entered U.S. from Mexico stopped by Hannibal police driving vehicle stolen from Ohio
HANNIBAL, Mo. — A St. Louis man was arrested Tuesday after he was arrested for speeding, and law enforcement officials later learned the car he was driving was reported as stolen.
The 10th Judicial Circuit Court of Marion County on Tuesday charged Oday J. Elayyan, 28, of St. Louis with tampering with a motor vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security issued a warrant for the arrest of an alien.
The charges stem from an incident that began at approximately 11:17 p.m. on Monday, July 1. An officer with the Hannibal Police Department stopped a vehicle for speeding on U.S. 61 near Fair Oaks. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Ohio. Elayyan was taken into custody without incident.
The St. Louis Office of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement was contacted. Elayyan was reported to have illegally entered the United States from Mexico. His bond for tampering was set at $10,000.
A press release from the Hannibal Police Department said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will take custody of Elayyan for removal proceedings under the Immigration and Nationality Act.
