Quincy Preservation Commission recognizes local landmark
QUINCY — The Quincy Preservation Commission recognized 1636 Hampshire St. as a local landmark during a special presentation on Wednesday, July 17. Mayor Mike Troup joined members of the commission in presenting a commemorative plaque to the owners of the property, David and Lynette Roll. Troup congratulated the Roll’s on this designation and said preservation is critical to Quincy.
“Quincy has long been recognized as a city with a rich history and amazing architecture,” said Troup in a press release. “With property owners like (the Roll’s), we know this property will be standing for decades to come. The city appreciates what you have done to make this possible.”
David Roll said he and his wife are preservationists at heart.
“To own a piece of Quincy’s history is amazing,” said Roll. “The (Bull Family) was critical to Quincy’s history and owning this home with that name associated with it is humbling. It is our responsibility to take care of this property and for that, we are thankful.”
Roll thanked the Preservation Commission for its assistance in granting landmark status to 1636 Hampshire St. which is known as the “Charles Henry Bull Carriage House.” The Quincy City Council approved the landmark designation in April 2023.
The Quincy City Council’s designation of a property as a local landmark provides special protections to specific architectural features. For 1636 Hampshire St., the protected architectural features include the round window on the home’s east side, the decorative wrought iron gutter supports, the large copper exterior lanterns, the cupola, the weathervane and the decorative brick detail beneath the roofline.
1636 Hampshire St. was previously included in the landmark designation for 1651 Maine. The carriage house was subdivided from the primary home years ago and the Preservation Commission felt it appropriate to provide a separate landmark designation for 1636 Hampshire St.
Nearly 150 properties in Quincy are designated by city ordinance as an individual “Local Landmark” or as part of a “Local Historic District.” Anyone interested in a landmark designation for their property should contact a member of the Quincy Preservation Commission or the City’s Department of Planning and Development at 217-228-4515.
