QUINCY — Dr. George Crickard, III, an orthopedic surgeon with Quincy Medical Group, recently achieved a significant milestone by completing his 50th procedure utilizing Persona IQ. This technology represents an advancement in patient monitoring and outcomes for total knee replacement surgery.

Persona IQ is the world’s first and only smart knee implant approved by the U.S. Food and Drug  Administration. The implant integrates sensor technology that wirelessly transmits data from the knee to  a patient’s home base station. This information is then securely transferred to a HIPAA-compliant cloud  platform, accessible by both the patient and their surgeon.

“While total joint replacement has been a common procedure since the 1970s, this is the first time technology has been used to help patients thrive in the post-operative period. This represents a fusion of function and cutting-edge technology,” Crickard said in a press release.

This approach fosters the patient-doctor connection. Real-time data is securely captured, enabling timely, safe and personalized care decisions.

“The smart implant is attached to the tibial (shinbone) component of the knee replacement,” Crickard said. “Following surgery, it allows the healthcare team — surgeons, nurses, therapists — to monitor relevant gait/walking metrics including knee range of motion, step count, and walking speed. We then leverage this data to assess patient recovery. We can see if the patient is  progressing well and determine if intervention is needed to optimize their outcome.”

QMG offers comprehensive orthopedic care, including advanced surgical procedures like total knee  replacement with Persona IQ technology. To learn more about the team and services at QMG, visit  quincymedgroup.com.
