Sue Newell Scholarship Showcase to be held Sept. 21 at The Legacy Theater
CARTHAGE, Ill. — Terry Newell has chosen The Legacy Theater in Carthage to present the Sue Newell Scholarship Showcase at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
This variety show is a third-party rental event hosted at the theater, produced in memory of Newell’s late wife, Sue, to raise funds for a scholarship fund in her name.
Entertainment will be a variety show featuring local/regional talent with a suggested freewill donation of $15 per person for admission. Tickets are available only in-person through walk-up at the theater box office in advance or at the door the night of the show. Terry Newell will emcee the evening with a variety of outstanding regional entertainment.
Iowa’s Nalani Proctor is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter who composes songs about life, love, Taco Bell and video games. Her robust singing voice is accompanied by guitar, ukulele, piano, flute, otamatone and kazoo.
Mary Lynne Arms, who grew up Hancock County, is a professional singer, actress, songwriter and director. Her credits include Broadway, cabaret, summer stock, St. Louis Municipal Opera, Quincy Community Theater and MacNamara’s Band in Keokuk, Iowa.
Tenor Danny Lasswell has sung at The Legacy Theater in a past production of A Christmas Wishand has performed at the Fort Madison Rodeo and in the Maryland Senior Idol Contest.
Opera singer Brad Culpepper, current director of hospitality at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, will add his voice to this night of music.
Bill Maakestad has performed the music of Hank Williams for many years, including his recent one-man musical Songs and Stories: An Evening with Jimmie, Hank, and Johnny. Maakestad will perform his favorite excerpts from this show.
Kirk Brandenberger, a fiddle player, has won many awards including Iowa and Kentucky state championships. He has recorded with nationally known and regional musicians during his 50-year musical career. He has toured nationally with Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers, and he was the host of two bluegrass radio shows. He now serves as the tourism director for Keokuk, Iowa, and is a former Legacy Theater Foundation board member.
The family of Colleen Newell McNulty will sing songs written by her late husband, Frank. Among the songs they will perform is “Bye Bye, Baby, Goodbye,” written in 1958 to worldwide acclaim.
Sue Newell attended V.I.T. High School in Table Grove and graduated from Western Illinois University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in English and speech. She taught English and speech and directed the class plays for many years at Carthage High School. She also taught English, speech and drama at Robert Morris College in Carthage and later became a recruiter and director of development at Robert Morris.
Newell was a trainer for major corporations in Chicago in human relations and English and speech skills. She worked alongside Terry in a customer service business for auto dealers and assisted Terry at Crooked Creek Art Gallery.
