Cause of Thursday morning fire at home near 30th and Vermont remains under investigation

Quincy Fire Department

QUINCY — The cause of a Thursday morning fire at a Quincy home is still under investigation by the Quincy Fire Department.

The Quincy Fire Department was alerted at 5:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, to a fire to a 1½-story residential home with a basement at 2902 Vermont. It was reported that the fire was in an upstairs bathroom, but it was not known whether people were inside.

The first crew arrived on the scene at 5:30 a.m. and observed light smoke inside the house. The Quincy Police Department reported that everyone was out of the house. The first fire crew deployed a hose line, and the second fire truck was staged at the fire hydrant in case additional water was needed. The third fire truck and Incident commander arrived on the scene as the first crew looked for the fire inside the house.

Fire was found inside the wall in the stairwell and on and under the floor of the second-floor bathroom. Drywall and wood trim were torn out, and the fire was quickly extinguished. Additional drywall was removed to be sure the fire had not spread up the wall’s interior. Fire crews worked to expose hot spots until none remained.

The last fire suppression crew left the scene at 7:20 a.m. No civilians or firefighters were injured at the scene.

A small portion of the bathroom floor and stairwell wall sustained fire damage and water damage. The rest of the main floor sustained minor smoke damage.

Ten firefighters were on the scene from two engines and a quint, as well as the assistant chief.
