Hannibal School District bumps substitute teacher pay to $100 a day

HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Hannibal School Board addressed the need for more substitute teachers at its regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening.

But Johnson also noted that fingerprinting is not readily available in the area as potential employees currently have to travel to Eolia in PIke County, Mo., which is a 120 mile round trip. Johnson is working with the Missouri Highway Patrol to bring a fingerprinting program to the board office for new and potential employees.

The board also voted to increase the compensation for substitute teachers. Johnson emailed several area school districts to find out how much those districts were paying substitutes. Hannibal was on the low end of the spectrum at $85 a day. Johnson recommended an increase to $95, but board member Linda Clark made a motion to increase the daily pay to $100 and that passed.

The board also got its first monthly report from the district’s new PR/Communications Specialist Andrea Campbell. The position is new for the school district. Campbell’s job is to improve communications about Hannibal students and the district.

Financing was also on Wednesday’s agenda. The board approved leasing two school busses through Commerce Bank at a cost of $257,425 including interest over 5 years.
