Leo L. Bauer – Duker & Haugh
Leo L. Bauer, age 92, formerly of Fowler passed away on Sunday morning , November 3, 2024, at Quincy Healthcare & Senior Center.
Leo was born Feb 4, 1932, the son of Albert and Irene (Hummel) Bauer. He married the love of his life, Mary Costigan, on Oct 12, 1957, at St. Francis Church in Quincy Il. They recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
Leo was a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame High School & began his career at N. Kohl Grocer. He was employed there for 49 years, during which he held a number of positions. In his younger days, he worked in the warehouse & as a driver. Eventually he moved into sales. He especially enjoyed his Monday route in the Keokuk, Iowa area. His family also enjoyed his Monday route because they knew to expect cream horns from Stan’s Bakery. He retired from Kohls in 1996.
Leo was a man of many talents and interests. In his younger days, he was a pitcher for the Prairie Farms baseball team. He continued to play both fast pitch & slow pitch softball well into his 50’s. He was a member of the K of C golf league. He also enjoyed his weekly volleyball games in St. Francis gym. He was a member of the Mart Heinen Club since its inception & was a season ticket holder for QU Hawks basketball for many years. He was an avid bird watcher & contributed data for the Winter & Spring National Bird Count for 25 years. Leo had a competitive side which Mary would see come out in their nightly games of Scrabble. Much to his family’s entertainment, he dabbled in poetry and was always willing to share his words of wisdom.
Leo is survived by his wife Mary and their 7 children: Paul, Terry (Becky), Dave (Patty), Pat (Ross) Glidewell, Karen, Cindy Cobb and Jennifer (Tod) Cunningham. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Robert, Milton & Reverend Roy Bauer, one sister Rita Hull and one grandson Sean Glidewell.
Leo was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fowler.
There will be a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Quincy. Visitation is from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.
