Cluck yeah: BK’s Place is back
Monroe City, Mo – The fryers are hot, the seasoning is smacking, and what is arguably the best fried chicken in the area, is back.
BK’s Place reopened their doors this week after being closed for service since July 30. Kathy Troy had to put a hold on her kitchen and her dreams after the building she held her family restaurant was unexpectedly sold. Troy said their goodbyes to that location and promised their loyal customers that they’d be back and better than ever.
The BK’s Place crew updated their Facebook page with the progress of their return. Whenever people in the community ran into Kathy or her husband, Bill Janes, they were quick to ask when they would be able to get their chicken fix in again. It took some time as they really did have to start from scratch.
They celebrated their 11-year anniversary of being in business on Sept. 20, while technically being closed. Kathy was still making magic in her own kitchen cooking, doing small caters, and odd jobs to keep the money coming in and keeping the BK name alive. She eventually found a home for her kitchen, after purchasing a shed-like building that her daughter deemed “the shack.” While it might be smaller in size, it’s her shack and no one will ever force her to close her kitchen again.
“I feel great because we are finally up and running after four months,” Troy said. “We had a few hardships, but we made it work and are blessed to be back and thankful for all the customers that stuck it out with us. We plan to have further improvements once we get settled in, so stay tuned.”
It’s a little different set-up as the service is a “chicken-to-car” service. You call in your order and pick it up through the drive thru. There are no longer dine-in options at this time, but there are plans to expand in the future. The menu and daily specials are found on their Facebook page. The potato bowls are going to be served daily after popular demands were made to make them a staple menu item. The people have spoken and BK’s listened.
While the new set-up may take some time for their loyal customers to get used to, a little change in where you must eat your chicken certainly shouldn’t stop you from attaining the fried delicacy. If you’ve ever had Kathy’s fried chicken, you’d understand that you’d travel ten unnecessary roundabouts and wait in a Walmart Black Friday line if that’s what you had to do to get it.
BK’s Place is now located at 122 East Summer Street and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last orders being taken at 6:45 p.m.
